Copacabana Cafe.

Conceptualising an app for an outdoor cafe chain in Dubai.

Category

Food & Lifestyle, Entertainment

Here, I conceptualised a consumer app for outdoor cafeterias in Dubai, for a fictional chain that was an amalgamation of various cafes I frequented in real life. The project involved discovery, research, ideation and conceptual & detailed design. I held interviews, circulated questionnaires, built personas, user journey maps, user flows, wireframes and high-fidelity screens for my designs, as a capstone project for the Google UX Design Professional Certificate. I referred to Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines, in an attempt to follow industry standards as closely as possible.

Project Overview.

Why I did what I did.

A little context.

During my college days, my friends and I would often spend evenings out in outdoor dining spaces in Dubai. It was part of the youth culture, and they would have a variety of cuisines, and a live event in the evenings. For my first UX project, I decided to think 'outside-the-box', but ended up doing something a hundred others did; a food-ordering app. But it wasn’t just that.

What I was going for.

Being an end-user myself, I had access to other target users and business owners, which would help me in my research, and figure something out that would help both sides. Plus, I wanted to use this to explore design as how it would be in real life, following systems such as the Human Interface Guidelines from Apple, and adhere to industry practices.

Understanding the Problem.

What problems do I need to address?

Interviews.

To understand who my target user was, and what improvements they wished to see in the whole experience, I decided to interview some of them. This included my peers, and other customers at the cafe that agreed to take part in the study. After this, I followed up with some questionnaires.

Competitive Audits.

Honestly, there are only so many ways that you can design a food-ordering app. I conducted a competitive audit, but this was more to explore the general pattern and find common themes that I would refer to, later on, in my process. This helped me as the designer to create a product that met market needs and at the same time, offered something unique to the users, by identifying opportunities for improvement.

01

Faster and seamless service.

Customers do not want to spend too much time at the cafe, or on the phone, to order food. They expect to know when their food will be served at the table, and often times, they run late for pickups and end up with cold food.

02

Rewards for regular customers.

There are regular customers in such cafes, that show up almost on a daily basis. They might even use the cafe as a remote workplace during quieter hours, and they wish they had perks for showing up often.

03

Live Events.

Even though the live events are advertised, unless the user is a regular, chances are they might have missed out on the tickets. At the same time, regulars wish to be incentivised wiht offers, rather than having to pay full price for shows.

04

More convenience.

Most regulars have their repeated orders, and they usually pay by the same payment method. The use of an app would eliminate so many unnecessary steps, and make the experience streamlined, and personalised for each user.

User Personas.

After addressing the key pain points, user personas were made to help me explore solutions. The key demographics targeted were students and younger working professionals, with a busy lifestyle who saw Copacabana as a hotspot for good food, networking and as a makeshift workplace.

User Journey Maps.

Now, I had to put myself in the shoes of the user. A current user journey map was made to explore how food orders were given at the time, using phone-in orders. Having first-hand experience definitely helped, and by exploring the user journey map, I was able to identify the ‘user’ feelings and find the core challenges and inspirations to solve using my designs.

User Flow Diagrams.

I then proceeded to make a user flow diagram, following the main challenges and opportunities for improvement identified in the user journey map. This included discovering food, placing the order and payments to finish the flow. While designing the same, this helped me have a mental model of the information architecture for the app beforehand, and which flows I had to prototype for future user testing and feedback.

From Concept to Design.

Following the best practices.

Wireframing, Testing, & High-Fidelity Designs.

After knowing what I had to design, I wire-framed the screens, first on paper, and then on Figma. Once I had something I was satisfied with, I did user testing with the low-fidelity prototype, before finalising and completing high-fidelity mockups and design assets. I explored Human Interface Guidelines, as I wanted to learn iOS guidelines along the way as I designed this app, for usual practices in colour, typography, navigation and iOS components.

Use the app to order your food while dining in. Add special notes, dietary preferences, or even upgrade your dishes to a full meal with chips and drinks. And the food will be served to your table, without a hassle.

Schedule your Orders.

Or even better, use the app to schedule your order for a specific time of the day, and know exactly when to show up and pick the order. That way, you don’t have to wait too long or end up with cold food.
